Shining Stars provides in-home Speech-language therapy. Shining Stars’ Speech-Language Pathologist, Wassim, has extensive experience working with children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He completed his Masters of Health Sciences (M.H.Sc.) at the University of Toronto – Faculty of Medicine Department of Speech-Language Pathology and was honored with the following:

  • Margaret L. Stoicheff Alumni Spirit and Leadership Award

Communication Expectations at each Child’s Level

and When to Consider Speech-Language Therapy

Birth to 12 Months

A Child at this Level May:

  • Orient towards sounds, voices and their name being called.

  • Share emotions when engaged with others

  • Use gestures, vocalizations, babbling and other physical movements to communicate understanding, elicit reactions from others or communicate wants and needs.

12 Months to 24 Months

  • Pointing or gesturing in response to questions

  • Follow instructions to attend to items or tasks receptively understands “more”

  • Follows two-step instructions

  • Uses 2-4 word phrases to express wants and needs

24 Months to 3 Years Old

  • Can follow three-step instructions.

  • Responds to basic questions and can sustain conversations using 2-3 word sentences.

  • Uses grammar appropriately by adding “s” for plurals and “ing” for verbs.

  • Will verbally request help from others and this skill is understood by all who interact with the child.

3 Years Old to 4 Years Old

  • Comments and ask for things using complete sentences.

  • Tell stories with a definitive beginning, middle and end.

  • Can use intraverbals (function, feature, categories and class of objects and events).

4 Years Old to 5 Years Old

  • Use words “but”, “because” and “and” in sentences.

  • Verbally describes past, present and future events.

  • Understands directional concepts (on/off, in/out).

  • Follows instructions in a group setting.

  • Tells riddles and jokes.

  • Describes previous events (i.e. yesterday, tomorrow).

  • Takes turns in conversations.
